Speak softly
and carry a big stick. —West African proverb, often quoted by Roosevelt.
Dynamic Leader: William Howard Taft described Theodore "Teddy" Roosevelt as "the most commanding, original, and brilliant personality in American public life since Lincoln." He was a famous war hero for leading the Rough Rider Regiment during the Spanish-American War. The first American to win a Nobel Peace Prize for mediating the Russo-Japanese War, Roosevelt made government a more active force in American life. After leaving office, this avid outdoorsman and conservationist hunted for animal and plant specimens for the Smithsonian Institution.
